IPv6 now supported in GeoIP, Proxy Detection, and minFraud web services

MaxMind is happy to announce the release of IPv6 support for our commercial GeoIP web services, minFraud fraud detection service, and proxy detection service. All of our web service API calls now accept IPv6 formatted addresses and work just as they always have for IPv4.

We all know that IPv4 exhaustion is imminent. Currently, more than 95% of usable IPv4 addresses are in use and the number is growing rapidly, making the need for IPv6 support much more urgent. Despite this, fewer than 20% of the top one million websites currently support IPv6, so everyone is playing catch-up. MaxMind recognizes that our clients need IPv6 compatibility, and we've received increased demand for it over the past year.

In response to this demand, MaxMind released IPv6 data in our popular free GeoLite databases earlier this year and just added the data to our GeoIP, minFraud, and Proxy Detection web services. The GeoIP web services currently geolocate IPv6 addresses at the country-level. We will phase in more granular geolocation data when possible.

Very soon, we'll be releasing IPv6 data in the downloadable GeoIP databases, so those of you not using web services should keep an eye out for those developments.
