A Culture of Peers

To deliver quality results for our customers, we recognized early on that we are one team and we work best when we work together. Knowing each other as people rather than just co-workers is one of the keys to our success. The members of our team are encouraged to be themselves, free to express their opinions, and to define goals and objectives collectively. We work hard to make sure every voice is heard (even the quiet ones).

As a company, many of us work remotely, so it’s natural that technology plays a major role in our daily communication. The process works because, at its core, our workplace is based on trust. Everyone, wherever we are located, trusts each other to get their work done, showing faith in each other and giving peers the flexibility to work how they want.

The long-term success of our business depends on our ability to attract and retain the best people and treat them well. We foster meaningful career paths for employees and create an environment where people feel that all aspects of their work and personal lives are being supported. Portions of our budget are dedicated to team building activities, social gatherings and an annual cross-departmental summit. We even have a cross-departmental group which meets regularly to come up with unique ways for employees to have fun. Working Together Remotely

MaxMind employees are distributed across the U.S. and Canada. We have team members who work from home, remote offices, and our Waltham office. We've had remote employees since 2006 and the practices and processes to support remote work have expanded as the company has grown.

Key to enabling this is communications, an emphasis on sharing information, and using tools and mechanisms which support team members in different time zones. We use Slack for messaging, Google Docs for collaboration, Google Meet for meetings, GitHub Enterprise for source control, wikis and knowledge bases, as well as Pivotal Tracker for user stories. Many teams - whether functional or project based - meet daily and use shared documents to enable threads of discussions across the team. Social and business Slack channels let people interact with each other and share advice, ideas, or simply interesting things they’ve found online.
