Data quality

Unlike competitors that typically rely on a single source of truth to determine the location of an IP address, MaxMind uses a proprietary combination of distinct signals including corrections, network operator signals, traceroutes, and end-user signals. By blending various data streams, MaxMind provides a more comprehensive and accurate location determination. We are able to return the correct town or a nearby town when competitors only locate the nearest large city. We blank out the subdivision, city, and postal when the end users are all over the country to reduce false positives.

Our proxy detection data is refreshed daily and we fine-tune retention and flagging durations based on real-time feedback from our risk scoring network, which helps reduce false positives in proxy identification.

Another way that we provide the most accurate IP geolocation and IP intelligence data possible is through partnerships with global internet service providers, content delivery networks, and other network operators. We also accept one-time corrections that we carefully review before accepting or rejecting to maintain the accuracy and integrity of our data.

Innovation

We use our decades of expert industry knowledge to continually improve and expand GeoIP^® and minFraud^®.

Guided by internal research and customer feedback, we generate innovative outputs such as static IP scoring (which helps indicate whether an IP address represents the same user over time) and user count (which is an estimate of how many distinct users share the same IP address).

Creator of MMDB, the industry standard

In 2013, we developed the MaxMind DB (.mmdb) open source database file format and APIs to access data keyed by IP address, mapping IPv4 and IPv6 addresses to data records.

Our MMDB format is widely accepted as the industry standard. In fact, most IP geolocation competitors offer their IP databases in the MMDB format.

Data accessibility

MaxMind takes a customer-centric approach to how we make our data accessible, accounting for scalability and different deployment models. Our data is available for both commercial and non-commercial applications in both web services and downloadable database formats, with client APIs offered in multiple languages.

MaxMind processes billions of transactions annually. To ensure 99.99% uptime and low latency for our web services, we have servers in North America, Europe, and Asia to route your requests in a fast, reliable way.

Transparency

One of the core tenets at MaxMind is transparency—in everything we do and offer. When it's not possible to be as accurate in our data as we would like, we're transparent with customers about technological or other limitations.

We offer a wide breadth of products and solutions to suit a significant number of use cases, but when our data cannot deliver exactly what a customer is looking for, we will say so.

Privacy compliance

We have made significant efforts to comply with the increasingly complex privacy laws around the globe.

We are an active participant in the Data Privacy Framework Program, complying with the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (EU-U.S. DPF), the UK Extension to the EU-U.S. DPF, and the Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (Swiss-U.S. DPF) as set forth by the U.S. Department of Commerce. We are also registered as a data broker in states with data broker registries (California, Oregon, Texas, Vermont).

Safe Coordinates, an internal tool that we developed at MaxMind, prevents IP addresses from being associated with a specific individual or household. Instead, the coordinates deliberately point to a body of water, park, or similar.
