GeoIP® accuracy comparison for locations worldwide

The accuracy comparison tool gives you a high level view of the GeoIP City database and web service accuracy. It shows you the percentage of IP addresses correctly located within a particular accuracy radius. If you select a specific country from the options below, you can compare city-level results for the GeoIP web services, databases, and GeoLite (the free version of the MaxMind's IP geolocation data) within your chosen country, to determine which service best fits your goals.

GeoIP product
Correctly located within 50 km
Located to a city, but outside 50 km
No city-level data available
GeoLite City database 71% 18% 11%
GeoIP City database 73% 15% 12%
GeoIP City web service 73% 15% 12%

Notes:

  1. Accuracy is calculated by checking known web user IP address and location pairs against the data within MaxMind's GeoIP web service as well as the GeoIP City and GeoLite City database offerings.
  2. Due to the nature of geolocation technology and other factors beyond our control, we cannot guarantee any specific future accuracy level.
  3. Fewer countries are available for cellular and IPv6 IPs due to limited test data.

What's the difference between the GeoIP web services and databases?

MaxMind's IP geolocation data is available in two primary delivery methods: as a downloadable database and as a web service, which is accessed via an API. The GeoIP databases allow users to locally host and utilize the downloadable databases for their applications. The GeoIP web services, delivering our most comprehensive GeoIP data available, are hosted, maintained, and updated regularly on secure MaxMind servers.

Looking for more than just city-level data?

Our web services provide IP geolocation and network data such as country, region, city, ZIP/postal code, anonymizer type, user count, confidence factors, static IP score, and more.
